About Our Group
The Head Disk Mechanical Team integrates heads and media for developing the next generation Seagate perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) products. We work with Seagate design centers and component centers around the world to stage novel head disc media interfacial technologies to improve the tribological performance, areal density, and reliability of PMR and HAMR Hard Disc Drives (HDDs).
About The Role - You Will
Our Shakopee campus is located 25 minutes southwest of Minneapolis in a setting with a rural vibe – it overlooks a horse racing track and stables, yet it has great entertainment venues close by as well. With wide-open spaces, the campus has plenty of space for running, biking, shooting some hoops or playing volleyball over lunch. If working out is your thing, the on-site fully equipped fitness center hosts wellness programs, tournaments and group workouts. Hungry? Seagate offers an on-site café with freshly sourced foods and specialty coffees, or if you prefer, drive to one of many restaurants just minutes away. #entrylevel

About The Role - You Will
- Integrate novel head and media technologies to improve the tribology of PMR and HAMR head disk interfaces
- Characterize Transducer and Media technologies to integrate in state of art hard drives
- Characterize the Head Disk Spacing and improve the test process to reduce head disk spacing sigma
- Perform a variety of experiments in the lab using bench instruments, signal processing, and oscilloscopes
- Do Volume data analysis using Python, JMP, Matlab, Minitab and MS Excel
- Uphold key Seagate values of integrity, inclusion, and innovation
- Excellent Communication and Teamwork abilities. Ability to communicate and collaborate with global and cross functional teams
- Highly motivated and self-directed
- Basic computer & presentation skills.
- Hands-on problem solver who can manage multiple projects
- Adapt to rapidly evolving technology and work effectively with ambiguity and change
- Familiar with basic data analysis, running experiments, operating laboratory instruments, and preparing technical reports
- Programming and debugging experience.
- PhD or master’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or equivalent
- MATLAB or Python experience is a plus
- Competency in MS office applications.
- Experience with statistical analysis
- Experience with tribology, lubrication, contamination control, material characterization (AFM, SEM), and thin films is a plus
